CT: A Theocratic State?

“The People of Connecticut acknowledging with gratitude, the good providence of God, in having permitted them to enjoy a free government;”

“The People of Connecticut acknowledging with gratitude, the good providence of God, in having permitted them to enjoy a free government;”

So begins the current Constitution of the State of Connecticut. In the beginning, Connecticut was governed by the Fundamental Orders which limited sovereignty exclusively to white men who were members of the Congregational Church.

Today we are governed by the “1818 Constitution”, which granted rights to protestants, then slowly those who are not white and then to women. For the most part, the Federal Constitution and laws have been way ahead of Connecticut in officially welcoming all citizens equally to our state and to participate in our Government.  Just a couple of lines down in the Constitution we can see how welcoming it is to all genders:

“All men when they form a social compact, are equal in rights; and no man or set of men are entitled to exclusive public emoluments or privileges from the community.”

Its far past the time when Connecticut’s Constitution welcomed all as if they had full citizenship, which they actually do have.

That is why Secular Connecticut has proposed a bill to create a Connecticut Constitutional Amendment to remove all religious and sexist language from the Connecticut Constitution.

Imagine being a woman PhD. chemist contemplating moving to Connecticut to join our bio-medial industry or an engineer contemplating joining our aerospace industry and for some reason reading our Constitution and feeling welcome? (Most PhD Scientists are non-religious as are over 90% of scientific Nobel Prize winners)
